What’s Happening on the South Shore this Weekend (Jan 24 – 26, 2020)

There is no question about it, the South Shore is intent on keeping you busy this weekend. Why not take up a new hobby like knitting, card making or journalling? You can celebrate Robbie Burns, go for a hike, see a movie, learn some healthy eating habits, and then dance the chill off at one or two of the numerous musical events going on. Jan 24 – Lahave River Beer Awards (Bridgewater)

King Street Brew Co. is celebrating all the home brewers who participated in making beer through their LaHave River Beer program. You are invited to come to the LaHave River Beer Awards celebration, they will be giving out gold, silver and bronze medals to the winners, plus an award for People’s Choice. Festivities start at 6pm, live music with Shawn Hebb starts at 8pm.

Jan 24 – Cas McCrea live at Firkinstein (Bridgewater)

FirkinStein Brewing is please to have Cas McCrea join them this Friday. An evening of acoustic tunes from rock to country, new to old! Music starts at 7pm.

Jan 24 – 5th Annual Jimmy Buffet Night at New Ross Legion (New Ross)

The New Ross Legion is bringing tropical vibes to the South Shore with their annual Jimmy Buffet Night this Friday from 8:30-11:30pm. Pull out your best Hawaiian shirt and be prepared to boogey down to Jimmy Buffett tunes,tunes Jimmy Buffet has covered, and tunes Jimmy should cover!

Jan 24 – Kirtan on the South Shore (Mahone Bay)

Balance to Bliss Wellness with Tracy Murdoch invites you to Kirtan on the South Shore this Friday at 7pm. Kirtan, or yogic chanting, is a call-and-response form of chanting that is a type of yoga in itself. It has many of the mind-calming benefits of a yoga class or sitting meditation. No chanting experience necessary! Just an open, curious heart. Chants will be provided to assist you. The cost is $15 suggested. Registration is requested, either by replying to the Facebook Event, or by emailing Tracy.

Jan 24 – The Lighthouse at Chester Playhouse Theatre (Chester)

Due to the storm last Sunday, the Chester Playhouse has rescheduled the showing of The Lighthouse to this Friday at 7:30pm.  Filmed right here on the South Shore, this Oscar nominated film tells the story of two lighthouse keepers trying to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Tickets $10 Adult. Tickets available at the door.

Jan 24 – Bayport Pub “Welcome Back Weekend” (Bayport)

The Bayport Pub is back and celebrating with a weekend full of events. Join local performer Pat Wardell this Friday from 7-9 and reacquaint yourself with all the delicious items on the menu and on tap!

Jan 25 – Doughnut Day at Weagle’s Bakery (Bridgewater)

Weagles’ Bakery is trying to make your January a little bit sweeter by having their first Doughnut Day of 2020 this Saturday from 9 am – 3 pm! So many fun choices to choose from. Jan 25 – Bayberry Wax Making – Tobeatic Wilderness Hiking Workshop (Shelburne)

Join East Coast Paddle Co. & Guide Service on a Tobeatic Wilderness Hiking Workshop. A mild wilderness adventure exploring Indian Fields, collect bayberry’s to make wax over an open fire. You will be able to take some wax home and use it to make cosmetics or candles (instructions will be provided). Enjoy a hot lunch of wild game chilli or corn chowder, homemade rolls and yellow birch tea. Tickets are $50 – includes hot lunch, work shop & guide service. Jan 25 – Art Trading Cards Workshop (Shelburne)

The Art COOP Gallery welcomes Janet Moore as she hosts an Art Trading Cards Workshop this Saturday from 1-3pm. During this 2-hour workshop you will be making your own trading card, small artworks in the size of hockey cards or baseball cards : 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″, using a variety of media including: acrylic paint, pastels, pencil, collage materials and more. The workshop is $35, all materials are included. There is limited space, please message via FB Event to pre-register.

Jan 25 – ABCO Industries Open House (Lunenburg)

Have you been curious about what they do at ABCO Industries in Lunenburg? Well here is your chance to have a look around. ABCO invites you to an Open House this Saturday from 1pm-3pm. Locals and visitors alike are welcome to drop in to see what they do, ask questions or to just say hello. They will have coffee and donuts and be giving tours of the facility along with answering any questions you may have about their 70+ year history in the engineered metal fabrication business and what they have planned for the future.

Jan 25 – Polar Dip for Mental Health (Mahone Bay)

The Kitch’inn host their second annual Polar Dip for Mental Health, this Saturday! Meet up on the little beach by the Mahone Bay Sign at 1pm with a big bonfire, hot beverages and a donation bucket! All funds raised are going to support Mental Health efforts locally.

Jan 25 – Edible Gardening for Beginners Workshop (Barrington)

Jan 26 – Knitting Basics Class (Mahone Bay)

Have a Yarn is offer a Knitting Basics Class this Sunday from 10:30pm-3:30pm. This class is for new knitters and returning knitters who want a refresher. Begin with the cast on, then work though the knit stitch & the purl stitch, increases & decreases, and joining a new ball of yarn. Then it’s time to bind-off and weave in the ends. Cost is $60 and required with registration. Yarn is provided, you will need 4 mm needles, scissors and a darning needle. Jan 26 – Cinema Sunday at Chester Playhouse (Chester)

This week the Chester Playhouse Theatre presents Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Downton Abbey for Cinema Sunday. Check out Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at 1:30 followed by the beloved Downton Abbey at 4:30. Tickets available at the door $10 Adults and $8 Youth.

Jan 26 – SASI Works Chili Dinner Fundraiser (Shelburne)

The Shelburne Association Supporting Inclusion (SASI) is hosting a Chili Dinner Fundraiser this Sunday from 2pm-5pm. Head to the Shelburne Lions Hall for a delicious meal prepared by SASI Works members. Dinner consists of a bowl of Chili, roll, assorted desserts and tea or coffee for $15 with all proceeds supporting SASI to provide hands on training and learning opportunities. Delicious dinner and live music, what a great way to support a great cause. Tickets must be purchased in advance at any SASI location.

Jan 26 – Eat to Feel Great workshop (Bridgewater)

Join Hayley Ewing, Registered Dietitian as she talks about focusing on fuelling your body for health with her Eat to Feel Great Workshop! In this class, Hayley will challenge you to rethink how you look at food. You’ll learn how to create balanced meals and snacks to nourish your hunger and feel your best. Get tips on how to set sustainable, long-term goals. and get rid of the ‘dieting’ mindset. Class is from 2-3:15pm, and here is some light walking involved. Jan 26 – Celtic Winter Sessions at Saltbox (Mahone Bay)

Winter is here. Snow Storms got you copped up inside? Well, head to Saltbox Brewery and enjoy an afternoon of Celtic Sessions. Lively jigs, driving reels and laid back grooves are sure to be cure those winter blues. The company is welcomed and the beer will warm the soul! Music is from 2-4pm, and as always no cover!
