Nova Scotia libraries see surge in demand for anti-racism books

The events around the world following the killing of George Floyd have been astounding. It is encouraging to see people educating themselves and wanting to do better. There is a responsibility for all of us to stand up and speak out in order to bring about change.

Troy Myers, chief librarian of South Shore Public Libraries, said they’ve seen a 10 to 15 per cent increase in demand after a Black Lives Matter rally was held in Bridgewater.

“I think people really want to understand the history, particularly in Canada,” Myers said.

“Often people don’t have a full understanding of what racism is and the full history of people of colour, Indigenous people who have struggled for generations. I think that’s the first step.”

Use of Wolfville Farmers’ Market’s online ordering skyrocketed during COVID-19

While most of our local farmers markets, including Lunenburg, Chester and Bridgewater, have also moved online, Wolfville Farmers Market had an online service established before COVID19, which allowed them to meet increased demand.

“We’re extremely grateful that maybe during this time people have had an opportunity to reassess where their food is coming from and that they’re making different choices,” said Huntley.

“It’s also really empowering, and we feel that we’re doing something right.”
