It looks like we have another beautiful weekend on the way, and it’s a good thing too because the South Shore is jam packed with events. The highlight of the weekend may be the 23rd Annual Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival and Antique Fair, but there are events of all shapes and sizes taking place. Sept 27, 28, 29- 2019 Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival and Antique Fair

Come join in on the fun at the 23rd Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival and Antique Fair! A three day weekend festival showcasing over 250 creative scarecrow displays, large antique fair, book & quilt sales, children’s activities, yard sales, BBQ’s, great eats, live music, shop specials, craft market and so much more! The festival kicks off on Friday morning when the unique and extraordinary scarecrows are officially on display.

Some of this years highlights include Free Kids Crafts at the Mahone Bay Museum, Raina the Mermaid at Baytubs, Fundraiser Yard Sale for Mahone Bay Museum, Free Kidsfest at Calvary Crossroads Church, and much much more…. visit Festival website for full program details!

Sept 27 – Ensemble Caprice & Constantinople (Lunenburg)

Musique Royal presents Ensemble Caprice & Constantinople in one truly entertaining evening. In this original musical program, the oriental instruments of Constantinople (sétar, kanun, oud and percussion) mix with the sounds of the Ensemble Caprice (recorders and viols) as well as with the voices of the soprano Rebecca Dowd and Persian singer Kiya Tabassian in a dialogue that blends European and Oriental medieval colours. Tickets are $25 at the door, $20 in advance and available at Shop on the Corner in Lunenburg.

Sept 27 – High Tide Shuffle Jazz Crew at St. Mark’s Place (Middle LaHave)

St. Mark’s Place is proud to welcome the High Tide Shuffle Jazz Crew to it’s stage this Friday. High Tide Shuffle Jazz Crew is a 4 piece band consisting of Mark Riley on vocals, Tim Fisk on Drums, Kevin Perkins on Bass and Jeff Campbell on Piano. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Sept 27 – Valdy live at the Astor Theatre (Liverpool)

Astor Theatre presents Canadian Folk Legend Valdy. A Canadian folk and country musician whose solo career began in the early 1970s, Valdy is known for “Rock and Roll Song” his first mainstream single. The winner of two Juno Awards for Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year, and has received seven additional Juno nominations. Tickets $35

Sept 27 – Flight Fridays (White Point Resort)

Ladies and Gentlemen, fasten your seat belts and prepare for take-off … Flight Fridays have begun in honour of the 2019 Nova Scotia Harvest Wine Festival. Flights of Wines of Nova Scotia Tidal Bay or Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia every Friday until Oct 25th at White Point Beach Resort.

Sept 27 – Scott Colp live at Saltbox Brewery (Mahone Bay)

Saltbox Brewery hosts Scott Colp this Friday from 7-9pm. Scott is a singer/songwriter from Lunenburg County who sings original songs and covers of Tom Petty, The Stones, The Beatles and more! No cover, just come on down and enjoy some great music.

Sept 27 – Trevor Pike live at the Rope Loft (Chester)

Head down to the Rope Loft for live music in the pub with Trevor Pike. Trevor is a singer-songwriter currently living in St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. Trevor has been performing music live for over 25 years with a repertoire that includes a long list of new and old favourites, with many of his original songs in the mix as well.

Sept 27 – Afterglow Art Festival (Bridgewater)

Afterglow Art Festival is a free Art at Night celebration of community creativity held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. For 7 years the event has brought together artists of all kinds – from budding young artists to experienced professionals from across Lunenburg County – to bring exposure to the talent of our rich community. Sept 28 – Lunenburg Lit Festival

Sept 28 – Apple Cider Days at Wile’s Lake Farm Market

What's happening on the South Shore

Join Wile’s Lake Farm Market on Sept. 28th & 29th for Apple Cider Days where they’ll be celebrating everything ‘apple’ — including a demonstration of apple cider pressing (from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm).  They are also going fry up a special batch of our donuts, using — you guessed it — apple cider!

Head down to the Western Shore Volunteer Fire Department for a Fish Fry and Dollar Auction. With proceeds going to Hinchinbrook Farm, a do you need another reason to enjoy a great dinner and spend a dollar or two at the auction?

Sept 28 – Aaron Warren live at the Country Market (New Ross)

Aaron Warren is back and live at the Country Market! Aaron has been a professional musician since 2017 and an amateur one since he could hold a trumpet at 2. Aaron is working to release new original music in the genre of a bluesy, rockin’ folk-country.

Sept 28 – Book Signing with Genevieve Graham (Mahone Bay)

Stop in at A Novel Idea during the Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival and Antique Show on Saturday from 1-3 as they host Canadian bestselling historical fiction author, Genevieve Graham. Genevieve will be in the bookstore to sign copies of her books and chat with customers.

Sept 28 – 103 Tailgate Party and Tap Takeover (Shelburne)

Join Boxing Rock Brewing Company on Saturday from 4-8pm for the inaugural 103 tailgate party! They are teaming up with some of the South Shore’s finest breweries to bring you an awesome party. Along with Boxing Rock, Heritage Brewing Co., Tanner & Co. Brewing, Salt Box Brewing Co., Hell Bay Brewing Co. and Tusket Falls Brewing Co. will be there. Come enjoy some delicious food, live music and play some games as well! The cost is $25 in advance here or $30 at the door. Tickets include an 8×4 oz samples and a sweet festival glass.

Sept 28 – Sandy Point Lighthouse Dance (Shelburne)

Head out for an evening to the Sandy Point Lighthouse Dance. Enjoy of all your favourite classic country and 50s rock and roll music with Dave Burbine and Traditional Country. Dance the night away, or just sit and enjoy the company of old friends and new friends. Always a great evening out. Admission is only $7 per person.

Sept 28 – Community Day (Port Mouton)

Head to the Coastal Queens Place in Port Mouton for their Community Day from 10-2. Flea Market, Bake Sale, with free hot dogs and drinks for kids under 7 (the rest of us ay $1). Head out early to the West Queens Rec Centre for the Community Breakfast for 8am-11am. $8 for bacon, eggs and all the trimmings!

Sept 28 – One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody (Liverpool)

Are you a Carrie, a Miranda, a Charlotte or a Samantha? Critics and audiences love the new live show One Woman Sex and the City coming to the Astor Theatre. Sept 29 – Introduction to Cheese Making (Mahone Bay)

Curd Girl and Sweetwood Farm invite you to the Introduction to Cheese Making (soft cheese) course! This class is a full day of learning the basics (and more) to making cheese at home. You’ll learn all about making cheese at home. You’ll work with cow’s milk and goat’s milk, use specialized cheese starter cultures, as well as explore other options for the DIY homesteader. Sept 29 – Ruby’s Spot Mobility Day (New Ross)

The New Ross Trail Society and Murphy family have been hard at work creating Ruby’s Spot, a beautiful place with sweeping views of New Ross, in the middle of a Christmas Tree farm, but understand some people may have difficulty accessing it. So they’ve organized a “Mobility Day” for those unable to walk the trail. From the Murphy’s property on the Forties Rd a motorized “ferry” will transport you to and from the overlook of the village of New Ross. No pre-registration. Meet and park at 180 Forties Rd, New Ross, NS.

Sept 29 – Watercolour & Wine at Petite Riviere Vineyards

Petite Riviere Vineyards presents Wine & Watercolour at Petite Riviere Vineyards – Grab your friends and come to the winery for a painting afternoon you won’t forget! Dennis Curran will help you create a watercolour painting and you get to take your masterpiece home! Tickets are $40 and include a glass of wine, light nibbles and all painting supplies. Sept 29 – Meal Planning 101 (Bridgewater)

Sept 29 – Rossini’s Semiramide (Lunenburg)

What's happening on the South Shore

Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance presents “the last opera of the great Baroque tradition!” — Rossini’s two-act tragedy Semiramide — on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Performed by an outstanding cast of top young vocalists from Canada, Mexico and Poland, prepared and directed by top Rossini conductor William Crutchfield as part of LAMP’s 6th annual Rossini Opera Academy.
