What’s Happening on the South Shore this Weekend (Oct 4 – 6, 2019)

As we welcome October and cooler weather, there is still plenty to do outdoors, but we are happy to have lots of events happening indoors too! Have a peek and discover what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend.

Oct 4 – Mandala Rock Painting and Vinyasa Flow Yoga (Bridgewater)

Back due to popular demand! Free to Be Yoga with Christy hosts Mandala Rock Painting and Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Grab a friend or treat yourself to this one-of-a-kind event that has brought so many people together Begin with a tour of The Salt Spa & Wellness Centre, then a demonstration on how to create your own beautiful Mandala, and end with a beginner level yoga class. No art or yoga experience necessary. Mandala painting only – $25 + Eventbrite fee, Mandala painting + vinyasa class – $30 + Eventbrite fee. All rock painting materials included with either ticket.

Oct 4 – Brain Injury Education and Awareness Conference (Bridgewater)

The Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia is hosting a Brain Injury Education and Awareness conference at the Best Western in Bridgewater. Are you a brain injury survivor or a caregiver/family member? Are you a health care professional who wants to develop your knowledge and skills? Do you work with a non-profit in the community and want to improve your knowledge of brain injury? Join B.I.A.N.S as speaker Chloe Luckett talks about “Love Your Brain”, attend panel discussion, workshops and a bonus session on Concussions with Dr. Tina Atkinson, Sports Medicine Physician with Halifax Mooseheads. Oct 4 – Morgan Davis live at the Grand Banker (Lunenburg)

The Grand Banker is has Juno Award Winning Blues Legend, Morgan Davis back this Friday starting at 9pm. No Cover! Always a great evening with good music, don’t miss out.

Oct 4 – Jazz Night with Nicola Miller Quartet (Mahone Bay)

Start you weekend off right at the Saltbox Brewery with Jazz Night featuring the Nicola Miller Quartet. Join Nicola and Friends oand wind down from the work week with a Saltbox Beer or Cider in hand while listening to their jazz tunes. As always, No Cover.

Oct 4 – Love, Loss and What I Wore – (Liverpool)

Astor Theatre is hosting a fundraiser for Queen’s Manor. Join them for “Love, Loss and What I Wore”, a performance that follows fragmented stories about the nostalgic power of women’s clothing. A cast of five women sit on stools and tell funny, wistful and universal memories about their families and loved ones through the prism of their closets. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to Queen’s Manor.

Oct 4 – P&R Karaoke at FirkenStein (Bridgewater)

FirkenStein is happy to have back P&R Karaoke this Friday. Grab your friends, pick your go to songs and have a great time taking the stage. Events kick off at 8pm.

What’s Happening on Saturday October 5th

Oct 5 – Shag Harbour UFO Festival (Shag Harbour)

Join your fellow believers at the Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society as they host their annual Shag Harbour UFO Festival this weekend for three days of conversation, presentations, trivia and tours. Most events will be taking place at Wood Harbour Community Centre. Please check the website for full program details, tours and and applicable ticket prices.

Oct 5 – Hearth and Home Tours (Chester)

Tourism Chester is proud to present Hearth and Homes Tours Saturdays in October. Fall in Love with Chester, Nova Scotia in this special autumnal adventure. Start on the water with Salty Dog Sea Tours for a lovely look at the stellar homes that stand in grandeur along our beautiful coastline. On the shore head to The Rope Loft where you’ll enjoy a delicious 2 course meal from a fall infused menu at their historic dockside restaurant. Tickets are $80 pp and can be purchased online.

Oct 5 – Fall into Christmas Open House (Bridgewater)

The Yellow Feather Gifts – Cindy’s Jewellery Page is celebrating their 1st anniversary by inviting your to their “Fall into Christmas” Open House. Oct 5 – Knitting Mittens Basics (Mahone Bay)

Thinking about handmade gifts this Christmas? Have a Yarn is hosting a Basics of Knitting Mittens course this Saturday. Learn the basics of knitting a traditional worsted mitten. You will practice the techniques needed to complete a mitten in addition to discussing yarn and pattern choices. Cost $50 + HST, All materials provided. Oct 5 – Empower Women’s 5k Walk/Run (Wileville)

Empower 5K and Servants Heart Ministries is hosting it’s 3rd annual Empoer 5K Walk/Run in Wileville in support of Danica’s Dream Pregnancy Education Centre in Sosua, DR. Registration is $35 and is available online.

Oct 5 – Bridgewater Fire Department & Emergency Services Fall Fair (Bridgewater)

The Bridgewater Fire Department is hosting its annual Fall Fair this Saturday from Noon – 3pm. Join them for this free event. Take in demos, participate in obstacle courses for both adults and kids. There will be giveaways, free hot dogs and of course Sparky!

Oct 5 – Clas Larsson Quartet live at Saltbox Brewery (Mahone Bay)

Head to the Saltbox Brewery and settle in with the Clas Larsson Quartet for an evening of Jazz Music. The Clas Larsson Quartet, with Clas Larsson on sax/clarinet, Tim Worthington on guitar, Robert Clark on bass and Jordi Comstock on drums, has been providing live jazz music on the South Shore, from Liverpool to Chester, as well as in Halifax, since 2000. 7pm sharp. No cover. You don’t want to miss these smooth cats!

Oct 5 – Jo Treggiari Launch & Talk for The Grey Sisters (Lunenburg)

Join Lexicon Books for the Lunenburg launch of co-owner and bestselling YA author Jo Treggiari’s newest novel The Grey Sisters. (Penguin Random House Canada)! Jeff Mercer, the Deputy Chief Librarian at South Shore Public Libraries), will be joining Jo in conversation.

Oct 5 – Liverpool Privateers Season Opener (Liverpool)

It’s hockey season once again. Head down to Queens Place Emera Centre for the Privateer season home opener. Don’t miss the most exciting hockey action in town, this year’s team looks like the best yet. Adults $9 and Students $6.

Oct 5 – Caribou Run, Laura Merriman, Mojo Martin and Kenneth Voita live at Chester Playhouse Theatre (Chester)

Chester Playhouse Theatre invites you down for a music filled evening that will be sure to get your toes tapping, fingers snapping and maybe even a little dancing. Caribou Run, Laura Merriman, Mojo Martin and Kenneth Voita all take the stage. Tickets are $25 available here.

Oct 5 – Lunenburg Opera House Grand Opening Songwriters Circle

The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society is excited to be holding the Lunenburg Opera House’s Grand Opening Song Writers Circle! Featuring four popular maritime musicians sharing their stories and songs; JP Cormier, Kellie Loder, Keith Mullins and Reeny Smith! The song writers circle performance begins 8:00pm. Oct 5 – Oktoberfest Dinner and Dance (Hubbards)

Hubbards Area Lion Club is hosting an Oktoberfest Dinner and Dance this Saturday. Dinner is from 6-8pm and features sausage, sauerkraut and all the fixins. $12 for adult, $6 for children. Music starts after dinner with “Sax in the City”. Cash bar available and 50/50 draw. All proceeds donated to the Hubbards Area Foodbank.

Oct 6 – Indian Point Fire Department Open House and Barbecue (Indian Point)

The Indian Point Fire Department, serving their residents since 1955, invite you to celebrate fire prevention week at our open house and barbecue. Come climb aboard one of their trucks, check out their facilities and equipment, and most importantly meet our outstanding roster of volunteers who appreciate your support!

Oct – Women in Love with Pascale Beaudin (Lunenburg)

Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance is pleased to present Women in Love, an afternoon recital featuring Acadian soprano Pascale Beaudin and pianist Walter Delahunt on Sunday at 2:30 pm. The New Brunswick-born Beaudin began her career with the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opera de Montreal and now appears on operatic stages in Canada, France and the United States. Tickets for this event are $35 per person ($12 for university or NSCC students) and are available by calling 902-634-8667 or at the Shop on the Corner.

Oct 6 – Abstract Autumn pARTy Nite (Bridgewater)

Come and join Janine Smith and welcome the new season in all its glory and paint yourself a gorgeous abstract art piece. Janine will be be at Kings Street Beer between 4pm-7pm ready to guide step by step as you create your very own ‘Abstract Autumn’ Masterpiece. Why not bring a friend or a group or even come alone for some quality ME! time. Space is limited with only room for around 12-14 people so reserve your place ASAP to avoid disappointment. $30 per person per painting session, includes all art supplies and instruction.

Oct 6 – Stephanie Sellers live at the Kitch’Inn (Mahone Bay)

The Kitch’inn is excited to present Stephanie Sellers live in concert! Singing and playing for folks in her Great Grandma’s nursing home, selling out shows at the local theatre at age 9, performing from Banff to Mexico, music is her passion. Having lived and played in Mahone she eventually moved back to Ontario to pursue her education, but she is back in town for a visit, and is thrilled to play an intimate house concert at the Kitch’inn! Join her for covers of all the songs you love! Tickets at Door $20, RSVP for a table BYOB.

The South Shore is home to many wonderful farm markets hosting incredible growers and makers. We love including these in our What’s Happening on the South Shore posts! As we head into fall, the majority of these markets will be closing down for the winter, make sure to get out and visit while you still can.
