What’s Happening on the South Shore this Weekend (July 24-26, 2020)

Last weekend we had a Virtual Fishing Derby, this weekend how about a Virtual Marathon? There seems to be no limit as to what South Shore communities can do to keep traditions alive, while creating new ones. This weekend learn to Banghra, head to the drive-in, take a sea kayaking course or visit a local gallery. Let’s see what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend!

What’s Happening on Friday July 24th, 2020

July 24 – “Wooden It Be Nice” Exhibition Seely Hall (Port Medway)

Seely Hall in Port Medway is holding “Wooden It Be Nice“, an exhibition by Vincent Dieras and Johanna Hancock. Vincent’s work is twig furniture and baskets made from trees and bushes on his Long Cove Road property. Johanna’s items include 19th century pine cabinets, tables and chairs, boxes and wooden farm implements. The exhibit runs July 17 – 27 Open 11 am to 4 pm. Please adhere to proper social distancing and please wear a mask. Cash or e transfers will be accepted on site.

July 24 – Learn Banghra (Bridgewater)

The Lunenburg County YMCA is excited to host a Learn Banghra evening. Banghra is an energetic, folk dance and music form that originated from Punjab, India. We welcome, Jaspreet Bajwa who has instructed for 10 years! Please call the YMCA 902-543-9622 to register now. Limited to 9 participants. This is a free event.

July 24 – New Works by Malcom Callaway Amicus Gallery (Chester)

Amicus Gallery is pleased to present New Works by Malcolm Callaway from July 23rd till August 5th. Please come by, say hi and see what Malcolm has been working on this year.

July 24 – Morgan Davis Live at St. Marks Place (Middle Lahave)

St. Mark’s Place is proud to present Juno Award winner Morgan Davis this Friday at 7:30pm. Over the years, Davis has won 8 Maple Blues Awards and a Juno in 2004 for Blues Album of the Year. This is an evening you won’t want to miss. St. Mark’s Place social distance seating arrangement is 34 people total. Face masks are mandatory and no beverages are allowed. July 24 – Place for Dory Mates : Musical Variety (Lockeport)

 One Meter Up and Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women & Song invite you to shake off the isolation blues by heading to Seacaps Memorial Park in Lockeport for Harmony Bazaar’s Place for Dory Mates Musical Variety. Head down this Friday at 6:30pm for an evening of amazing local talent.

July 24 – Dynamic at the Bayport Pub (Riverport)

Bayport Pub is happy to welcome back Dynamic this Friday. Head down for a great meal and music. Call (902) 764-2404 and book your table today. If you can’t make it out on Friday to see them, head over to Firkenstein Brewing on Saturday and catch them there.

What’s Happening on the South Shore Saturday July 25th, 2020

July 25 – Seas the Day Virtual Race : Nova Scotia Marathon

 Barrington Municipal Recreation Department and Nova Scotia Marathon invite you to participate in the Seas the Day Virtual Race. Due to COVID-19 the annual Sea Me Run Nova Scotia Marathon is postponed to 2021 so, this is our 49.5th Annual Nova Scotia Marathon! Participants are encouraged to run any distance they desire, but make sure it ends with a .5. This race is a fun run, times will not be documented for any major marathon qualifier. Once you have completed your race, you can share your time on the NS Marathon Facebook page and put #SeasTheDay. Registration will close on July 24th at 4:30pm. Registration fee is $10. All proceeds will be donated to local school lunch voucher programs in the Municipality of Barrington

July 25 – All Levels Hatha Flow Yoga (Bridgewater)

Join Yoga with Lisa Saturdays for All Levels Hatha Flow Yoga classes. This is an outdoor class overlooking the LaHave River with plenty of space and shade.The class is designed for someone new to yoga or someone with yoga experience. July 25 – Family Canoe Afternoon at Wile Lake (Wileville)

District of Lunenburg Recreation is having a family canoe at Wiles Lake! Join us on Saturday afternoon from 1-3pm for some canoeing fun. Registration will be on-site. We hope to see you there!

July 25 – Saturdays in the Park Concert Series (Lunenburg)

In a summer of cancellations, including the Folk Harbour Festival, the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society will be presenting free, live concerts at the Bandstand in Lunenburg. Join us this Saturday as we present Ian Sherwood. These one hour concerts will take place at 2 pm throughout the summer. They will hopefully fill a void in the summer’s schedule of community events, and are designed with musicians, audience members, and local businesses in mind.

July 25 – South Shore Drive In presents “Mamma Mia ” (Mill Village)

South Shore’s Drive-In movie this Saturday is “Mamma Mia“! As Sophie and her family are busy preparing for her wedding, she secretly invites three men, who were her mother’s lovers in the past, with the hope that one of them is her father. July 26 – Introduction to Sea Kayaking (LaHave)

Cape LaHave Adventures is holding an Introduction to Sea Kayaking course this Sunday 9:30am-5:30pm. This day-long beginner course covers basic sea kayaking skills, including assisted rescues and safety considerations for paddling along calm shorelines. No experience required! The course costs $149.00 pp, reservations are required. Time: 9:30am-5:30pm (Please arrive at 9:15am) Includes: kayaking and safety gear & instructor. July 26 – Wild Blueberry U-Pick Tentative Opening (Clyde River)

This Wild Blueberry U-Pick is located 1 km north off Hwy 103 on the Upper Clyde Road, in Clyde  River. Tentative opening date for the 2020 season is this Sunday, July 26. Open daily 9-4 pm, weather permitting with some evenings which will be announced later. Check the facebook page for daily update, field conditions and COVID-19 protocol including social distancing. Blueberries are only $2./ lb. Please bring your own containers. Washroom facilities available at the field. For any further information we can always be reached at 902-637-8322.

July 26 – An Afternoon of Country Music (Shelburne)

The Shelburne Lions Club is please to have Dave Burbine & Traditional Country back for an Afternoon of Country Music this Sunday at 2pm. All your favourite Country songs in a safe, relaxing environment. Physical distancing rules will be maintained and seating will be limited to maximum of 100 people per Provincial regulations. **Masks are encouraged but not mandatory. July 26 – Chester Bandstand Summer Concerts with Jamie Junger (Chester)

The Chester Bandstand Summer Concert Series is back on Sunday evenings in the Seaside Village of Chester! A wonderful backdrop for an evening of music. Please see poster for COVID-19 Guidelines. A wonderful part of what’s happening on the South Shore.

AUG 2 – Lobster Trunk Sale at Bonny Lea Farm (Chester)

Okay, technically this event is happening next weekend, however due to COVID-19, the Lobster Trunk Sale for Bonny Lea Farm will look a little different this year and advanced orders for lobster need to be placed by July 29th. This year we will not hold a dinner, instead, we will have a drive thru, lobster only, event, with two pick-up locations: Chester and Halifax!!!

For more than 30 years Bonny Lea Farm has been serving up 600 lobster dinners on the Sunday of the August long weekend. Our lobster is sponsored by Clearwater and all proceeds support our specialized programs for adults living with an intellectual disability. Order your lobster today, and help support this wonderful organization.
