Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday morning I usually grab a coffee and take time to catch-up on some stories I may not have had time to read throughout the week.  I thought you might enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee as well.

Sarah Mitton crushes Canadian indoor shot put record

LighthouseNow

With all the excitement of the olympics, it was great to hear the news this week that former Olympian, Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, shattered the Canadian indoor shot put record.

Mitton will be training in California until March 13, when she leaves to compete in the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, with a goal of finishing in the top eight. She will also compete in the World Athletics Outdoor Championships that will take place in the U.S. in Oregon.

Mitton is ranked third in the world based on single throwing distances. The Word Athletics organization has her ranked 15th in the world, using a formula based on her top five average performance points.

How gold nanoparticles can be used to quickly test drinking water for bacteria

Thanks to Amy Keirstead who suggested this story for Sunday Morning Coffee.

Dr. Hallett-Tapley grew up in Shelburne, went to Acadia for her undergrad and then Dal for PhD and is a professor at StFX. A real NS/South Shore success story!

Exciting work being done by Dr.Hallett-Tapley and Maria Jazmin Silvero, developing a test to rapidly detect bacteria contamination in drinking water by using gold nanoparticles, antibiotics and light.

“We came up with this idea that one of the big commonalities in both of our countries is the inadequate and inequitable access to clean drinking water, like, across the board,” said Hallett-Tapley.

“We know this is a huge, ongoing crisis in the First Nations communities across Canada, and we know that one of the big problems is bacterial contamination of this water.”
