Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday morning I usually grab a coffee and take time to catch-up on some stories I may not have had time to read throughout the week.  I thought you might enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee as well.

Accessibility improvements made at Beach Meadows Beach

The beautiful Beach Meadows beach in Queens County has been made more accessible with the addition of a Mobi-mat rollout beach mat was installed that reaches to water’s edge.

A Mobi-mat is designed to provide ease of access for people who find it difficult to walk on a particular surface, such as sand. Made entirely of recycled polyester, it’s non-slip, has white stripes on the edges for the visually-impaired and is UV-, water- and mildew-resistant.

A wheelchair accessible picnic table was also installed and these were both recommended by the municipality’s Accessibility Advisory Committee as part of the municipality’s recently approved Queens Municipal Accessibility Plan.

ASL Story Time brings children’s literature to life with sign language

A wonderful story of a Nova Scotia student proposing the idea of using ASL to bring East Coast authors books to life with an online video series called ASL Story Time. I would encourage you to check out one of their videos and watch the stories come to life in a whole new way.

Ellershouse high school student Kaylee Harding is a youth ambassador with Digitally Lit, which promotes literary practices with digital tools among Atlantic Canadian youth. An ASL user who learned the language to communicate with her uncle who is deaf, Harding proposed ASL Storytime as a way to provide children who are deaf or hard of hearing with enjoyable tales at a time when they may not have been able to access school or public libraries.
