Just like Mom Used to Make- English Muffin Mini Pizzas

I posted a photo on my Facebook earlier this month of some English Muffin Mini Pizzas I had prepared and so many people responded with nostalgic memories. Lots of comments  like…”these are just like my mom used to make!….”I used to love these…” I have to say that they regularly make appearance here and everyone …

Pioneer Woman’s Chicken Pot Pie

Pioneer Woman and I go way back…to the beginning of blogging…or at least when I discovered this thing called blogs. Ree Drummond, who is also knows as The Pioneer Woman describes herself as “an accidental country girl” who shares recipes, stories and beautiful photos, of their family life with 4 kids on a beautiful ranch …

Meal Plan Monday

Ok…I slipped. I got busy and decided to just “wing it” the last few weeks as far as meal planning went. It wasn’t pretty. There were a few pizza boxes here and there, some of those chicken tenders and tators, and multiple times I went to cook something, but realized I didn’t have all the …

Chicken and Black Bean Burritos

Chicken and Black Bean Burritos are definitely on my Family Favourites list. Any leftovers are claimed and hidden in the back of the fridge (leftovers turned into the next days lunch, are hot commodities in this house). It’s also one of my go to make ahead meals. Save Print Chicken and Black Bean Burritos Serves: 8 …

Cinnamon Apple Bread

What says “back to school” more than apples? It’s September and apple season is just getting underway here in Nova Scotia with some local Gravensteins making their first appearance at our local farm markets. This is the perfect time to try a new apple recipe or two. Trust me, anytime you combine apples and cinnamon, someone will come in and say “what smells so good?!” Our favourite this time of year is Cinnamon Apple Bread.

I’ve made this Apple Cinnamon Bread twice this week already! It’s a great after school snack, and declared by my daughter’s best friends as one of the “best things ever!” 😉 I told her I would share the recipe so she could try to make it herself sometime. Quick to assemble, basic staple ingredients…a fun project to let the kids tackle sometime.

Here’s what you need:

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup milk
1 large apple, peeled and finely chopped

Check out Melissa at The Happier Homemaker for the recipe.

The air is starting to cool a bit, we’re grabbing sweaters when we head outside, this Cinnamon Apple Bread goes perfectly with this change in the seasons. September..apples…and bread…sounds good to me.

Meal Plan Monday

OK…it’s September. Time to put the hot dogs and watermelon down…and get back in the kitchen and make some real meals. My meal planning during July and August is pretty light, so I’m usually feeling ready for a more balanced approach to meal time by the fall, and that means it’s time to get back …

Do you have a summer to-do list? I’m not talking about cleaning out the garage, or getting the house painted…like a FUN summer to-do list! My list is pretty simple…mostly local…but one of the things I really wanted to do this summer, was to make it down to the Best Coast Coffee Gallery in Broad …

Blueberry Lemon Buttermilk Cake

While I was at Bob and the Boys Farm Market this week, I picked up some beautiful blueberries and lemons. I just love the taste of lemon zest when it’s added to a blueberries in a recipe…so fresh…and…zesty. 😉 So what could be better than the two combined…in a cake…that you can eat for breakfast! …

Strawberry Bread Recipe

Summer time is here and the fruits of the season are arriving! If you try to eat seasonally, then you know that some things are eagerly anticipated…like the arrival of fresh strawberries. Do you go strawberry picking? If you do go and end up wondering what to do with some of your berries, a little …

Strawberry Picking on the South Shore

There is nothing better than the taste of a fresh picked strawberry in the summer. Like, literally…nothing better. People wait all year for the first strawberry shortcake, berries and cream, or to start jam making. This is why eating seasonally is so optimal, but be warned, it can/will ruin you for eating strawberries any other …
