Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually grab a cup of coffee and take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. I thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, that you might enjoy with your Sunday Morning Coffee.

Some Halifax restaurants giving up plastic straws, stir sticks – Nova Scotia – CBC News

Small steps, taken by many can make a big difference. I have pretty much completely cut out plastic bags by always having a reusable bag with me.I have been working on straws, coffee cups, etc. There is just so much plastic in our everyday lives that end up in the landfill and oceans. We need more businesses like this leading the way. This makes me happy. 🙂

“We were a little taken aback by how many we were using. And when we were looking at some other things that we do to try and be a little bit nicer to Mother Earth, this one here seemed like an easy choice for us,” said co-owner Geir Simensen.”It seems like the responsible thing to do.”

Ivany report inspires family farm to create kale ‘super salad’ – Nova Scotia – CBC News

Wow…there’s one thing to read the Ivany Report, it’s another entirely to personally put it into action. How exciting to have this Nova Scotia made product now being shipped internationally! This kind of thinking and end-result is what we need here to be able to face the future with any certainty.

A few years ago, the family got to talking about the Ivany report. Two of its main recommendations are for businesses to increase exports and add value to products. The Rands added a kale crop and began exporting it to the U.S.
