Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually grab a cup of coffee and take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. I thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, that you might enjoy with your Sunday Morning Coffee as well.

She Said: Graduations Need a Make Over – Pickle Planet Moncton

This is timely and rang so true for me. After attending many graduation ceremonies over the past several years, including my twins Grade 12 graduation last year, I would love to see a change in how they are performed. With a large school, most of the evening is spent watching the students walk across the stage. After the first 2+ hours, it can certainly start to feel impersonal. I love Sweden’s example of including community, and establish a culture of belonging. Read this…let me know what you think.

Let’s first reflect on a traditional North American graduation ceremony, such as those happening this week around the Greater Moncton Area and across our province and country. Remarks from school administrators. A guest speaker or two. A valedictorian speech, which may or may not be painful for everyone involved. Awards announced for athletics and academics. Then the one-by-one walk across the stage. As my friend stated: where is the fun? the joy?

Meet the man walking across Canada without leaving his town – Nova Scotia – CBC News

This is cute, and inspiring! His doctor told him he should lose some weight to help his back problems, so he started walking. He keeps track of his distance with the goal to virtually walk across Canada…and he’s almost done it! I love his attitude, and wonder what kind of sneakers he wears. 😉

After Dave Durkee strolled through Kamloops, B.C., on his epic cross-Canada walk, he opened the front door to his home in Yarmouth, N.S., and started teaching a music class.Durkee, 62, is on a whimsical walk that will take him coast to coast without leaving southern Nova Scotia. Every morning since October, he’s set out at about 6 a.m. to walk for three to four hours. While his feet don’t leave the streets of Yarmouth, his avatar takes the same steps on a virtual map of Canada.
