Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. Thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, maybe you will enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee too.

Down to zero: How this Ottawa entrepreneur plans to change the way you buy food – Ottawa – CBC News

I think a lot about garbage….sounds fun right? 😉 Mostly I am thinking about how much we produce and how to cut that back. Near the top of the list of annoyances is the excessive packing there is with regards to food packaging from the grocery store. I can see no reason why an English cucumber should ever be wrapped in plastic, let alone a group of 3 individually wrapped in plastic…then all three wrapped in plastic AGAIN! (I’m talking to you Costco…) Needless to say this story caught my eye. It’s a bit fascinating how she came to the point of opening her own zero waste store, but I would love to see that become more of the norm. Sounds impossible…but everything does, until you do it.

For most people, garbage day is hardly something to ponder, beyond remembering it’s time to put out the trash. For Valérie Leloup, though, the day is a stark reminder of just how much stuff we could avoid throwing out if only we made the effort

LighthouseNow: Y teaches youth job skills

Wow…I love this story! Giving teens a chance to improve their employ-ability, learn leadership skills, and get their First Aid, in a comfortable setting is a fantastic idea. We have many employers who are struggling to find workers, and some young people who may not have the skills required to successfully interview or begin employment. What a terrific partnership this is and kudos to the YMCA Lunenburg County for being able to facilitate this through the success of their Youth Centre.

Eleven teens are closer to getting employment thanks to a pilot project aimed at giving them the necessary skills and attitudes to land a job. The Job Preparation Skills for Youth program is a collaboration between the employment division of Nova Scotia Community Services and the Lunenburg County YMCA. It was held at the youth centre on King Street in Bridgewater from March 13-16. According to Kim Whitman-Mansfield, the youth coordinator for the YMCA of Southwest Nova Scotia, it’s the first time they’ve done a program for children whose families are involved with Community Services.
