Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. Thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, maybe you will enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee break too.

28 Nova Scotia Waterfalls For Your Bucket List | WiseGuides.ca Nova Scotia

Thank you to my friend Carrie who sent this to me and suggested it for Sunday Morning Coffee. I love it and what a great resource for planning a hike. So many of these are new to me. There is only one listed for Lunenburg County, that I haven’t been to yet, but I know has become quite popular in recent years. This could make a great summer bucket list!

Waterfalls are abundant here in Nova Scotia. Exploring them will take you from one end of the province to the other. So no matter where you are, there’s probably one nearby. Many require a hike through wooded areas, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. The waterfalls in Nova Scotia are hidden gems, tucked away off the beaten path. Don’t forget to pack some snacks (and maybe take your bathroom break) before heading out.

School’s cellphone ban experiment rings up success – Nova Scotia – CBC News

I listed to this story complete with some students being interviewed on Friday afternoon. The teacher who set it up did such a great job of doing surveys before and after so she has some tangible evidence of how it affected the students and the school climate. Now, she’s being approached by schools and teachers all over the country.

Our kids are the first generation…as are we as parents, teachers, society…figuring out how to navigate smart phones and the internet in general and how to apply it to our daily lives. There will be many learning curves along the way. It was clear the kids they interviewed felt they were getting more work done, were more engaged, and felt more relaxed. Very interesting story, and results.

But Grade 8 student Salma Khattab said she doesn’t even bother taking her phone out of her locker anymore. She quickly noticed she was getting more work done without it and people were engaging more with each other.”We were talking more, like at lunches we were talking to each other, not sitting in groups on our phones, as usual.”
