Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually take some time to read stories I may not have time for through the week. I plan to share some of my favourite links here so that you might catch up on them as well with a cup of Sunday morning coffee as well.

How a Nova Scotia businessman has helped students from his hometown graduate debt-free for half a century

I have long been fascinated by this story. What a gift…what a legacy.

The J.D. Shatford Memorial Trust is a splash of geographically specific philanthropy, a gift of enduring largesse, derived from a local boy named Jefferson Davis Shatford who went away and made good and who continues to make good for Hubbards, some 57 years after his death, thanks to the pile of money he bequeathed to it.Believed to be in the US$5-million to US$8-million range, the trust is managed by a trio of New York bankers and pays out annually to the college or university-bound youngsters who apply for it. It is community rote that one and all do. The money is earmarked for “educational” purposes, helping to defray tuition costs for Hubbards’ sons and daughters, as well as those living in nearby Mill Cove and Fox Point, an area encompassing about 2,500 people.

Syrian chocolatier opens factory in Antigonish – Nova Scotia – CBC News

What a wonderful story this is! Community spirit alive and well in Antigonish…just amazing!

Seven months ago Hadhad was a desperate Syrian refugee and now he is the proud owner of Peace by Chocolate which is housed in that tiny shed. As his son Tareq translates, a smile comes across Assam’s face. “He is saying it is a big happiness. Today is a happy day to have come this far in a short time,” said Tareq Hadhad.
