Gow’s Home Hardware Recognizes “Giving Back” April 2017

The South Shore is known for their volunteer spirit. In communities all across this area there are hundreds of people giving back in some way each and every week and making a difference in people’s lives. They are fire-fighting, teaching, entertaining, raising money, driving, cooking, serving and more. Volunteerism is a vital part to building and maintaining our healthy communities and healthy lives. Welcome to “Giving Back April 2017”.

April is National Volunteer Month in Canada and I thought it would be the perfect time to begin a new series here on Simple Local Life that highlights some of the great work and spirit that exists here. Once a month we will feature someone on the South Shore who is volunteering their time in some way to make our community and lives stronger.

Our first “Giving Back” recipient is Reid Whynot from East Lahave.

Volunteering is just a part of Reid Whynot’s life. From Cubs and Scouts to Minor Hockey and Crime Stoppers, there are many organizations who have benefited from Reid’s time and dedication. Reid is probably best known for his commitment and service with the Bridgewater Fire Department. He has been a member of the BFD for 44 years, including 8 years as Chief. In 2012, Reid received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which recognizes deserving Canadians who made significant contributions to their communities and their province.

If you ask Reid why he spends so much time volunteering, he says he “just likes to help people”. He genuinely enjoys it and finds it very rewarding. Reid is getting ready to retire this month from Gow’s Home Hardware after 33 years. Owner Amanda Fancy says that “Reid has been a staple to the store for many years and has contributed greatly to our success. We wish him and Karen all the best.”

Reid thinks that retirement might actually lead to more volunteering in the community. He recognizes that without his wife Karen’s support he wouldn’t be able to do all that he does. Reid is also a Municipal Councillor for the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg being elected this past October.

Founded in 1848, Gow’s has been serving the residents of Bridgewater as one of the oldest established businesses in the community. Gow’s Home Hardware is the proud sponsor of the “Giving Back April 2017” profile.
